Summer Social Runs
01/08/2010

The Summer Social Runs series has begun.  These are held on alternate Wednesdays during the Summer.  They are leisurely social runs (definitely non-competitive) that usually have a 6 - 8 mile and a 4 or 5 mile option plus an approx 3 mile walk (all depending upon location suitability).  The events are always based from a pub with car parking and with decent snacks or dinners.  It is usual to try to gather around 18.30hrs to change, decide food arrangements and order, plus to get a briefing about the route all prior to a start at 18.45hrs.  These times do get adjusted sometimes to suit the particular needs of the location and event etc.

The Summer Social Runs are :

Wed 5 May 18.30hrs Royal Oak, Hail Weston - Norma
Wed 19 May 18.30hrs Duncombe Arms, Waresley - Ann & John Storey
Wed 2 June 18.30hrs The Black Bull, Brampton - Jo Owen & Dianne Prout
Wed 16 June 18.30hrs Rowing Club - Not Kenny's Relay
Wed 30 June 18.30hrs Anchor, Gt Barford - Mark & Michala Forster
Wed 14 July 18.30hrs Wimpole - Steph Williams
Wed 28 July 18.30hrs Royal Oak, Hail Weston - James Bolm
Wed 11 Aug 18.30hrs The Thornton Arms in Everton - Ruth & Liz
Wed 25 Aug 18.30hrs Mick & Barbara Reading - Axe & Compass, Hemingford Abbotts

Riverside Runners Championship 2010
30/06/2010
We are now over half way through the Riverside Runners Championship and a record of the latest provisional scores for all entrants is published on the website in the document library. If you have run in a road race for Riverside Runners this year and posted your results on this website, you are included.

The championship recognises the best overall club performer taking into account their performance in a maximum of ten races over the year, based on a variety of factors including their age, the amount of miles they ran in each race, the variety of different distances they have covered and how much improvement has been made on personal best times.

At the end of the year the person with the most points based on their best races up to a maximum of ten races, will win the championship.  There will also be awards for the best runners in each age category.

The latest results show all the races you have entered this year that qualify for the Championship, with your scores. There is also a separate ‘Rankings’ document showing the cumulative scores for each runner.

Don’t be concerned if you are not shown in the top ten of the ‘Rankings’ as there are still plenty of time for you to enter races and increase your points. Also, remember that those people who have ran more than 10 races already, will only receive scores for their best 10 races at the end of the year.

For details of how the rules operate please click ‘Document Library’ on the left hand side.

- Not Kenny's Relay -
20/05/2010
The traditional Riverside Runner’s “Not Kenny’s Relay” will take place on Wednesday 16th June.  This is a fun event for both senior and junior club members.  Runners are put into teams of mixed abilities and compete in a relay race around the Riverside Park.   Parent support would be great and you can spectate from the comfort of the rowing club or you are more than welcome to join the teams in the Riverside Park.  The presentation to the winning team will take place at the rowing club.  Pizzas can be ordered and paid for prior to the race and will be delivered in time for the presentation.  Drinks will be available from the bar.

Interested?      Here’s all you have to do!

•    Meet at the rowing club between 6.15 and 6.30 pm where you will be placed in a team
•    Order and pay for your pizza
•    Run as fast as you can
•    Sit back and enjoy your pizza, drink and some good company before the presentation to the winning team.
•    If you are not going to run but could offer support marshalling this event it would be greatly appreciated.

May Club Meeting
03/05/2010

This week's Club Meeting (Thurs 6 May) will be held at the Bowling Alley on Huntingdon Road, St Neots (adjacent to Priory Park) in one of the upstairs rooms.  The room will be available from around 19.30hrs and the meeting will start at 20.00hrs.

This is a "one-off" change to enable the refurbishment of the bar  and room at the Rowing Club to happen more efficiently than if we start paddling about there.

Riverside Runners Championship 2010
03/05/2010
We are now into the second quarter of the Riverside Runners Championship and a record of the latest provisional scores for all entrants is published on the website in the document library.  This covers results from January to April and will be updated every two months.

The championship recognises the best overall club performer taking into account their performance in a maximum of ten races over the year, based on a variety of factors including your age, the amount of miles you ran in each race, the variety of different distances you have covered and how much improvement you have made on your personal best times.

At the end of the year the person with the most points based on their best races up to a maximum of ten races, will win the championship.  There will also be awards for the best runners in each age category.

All runner abilities are welcomed as the Championship is designed to take into account new starters, improvers and competitive runners.  For details of how the rules operate please click ‘document library’ on the left hand side.

Beginners Sessions
12/04/2010
Motivated by the London Marathon?  Riverside Runners at St Neots are again offering free, friendly coaching sessions for beginners to running.  These sessions over twelve weeks are aimed at absolute or near beginners.  The objective of the sessions is to introduce prospective runners gradually to running so that they can reasonably contemplate taking up jogging or running as a regular component of a fitness routine.  The sessions start on Monday 26 April 2009 at 18.30hrs meeting at the Rowing Club (beside Priory Centre, St Neots) and will continue for twelve weeks.

Anyone interested, feel free to ring Helen Liddle on 01480 217819 for details or encouragement - or just turn up on Monday evening with whatever kit that you already have for starting some exercise in.

Riverside Runners Annual Trip
03/03/2010

Update - 24 Riversiders have made firm bookings.  Very last chance to secure your place on this trip as final bookings are likely to be made on Monday 8 March.

Having scanned the field for likely looking venues for the 2010 annual trip, Mark presented a shortlist to the members at the November meeting asking for feedback.  Since then he has refined the options to Zagreb, Croatia for the weekend of 8 - 11 Oct 2010.  Mark believes that the price is likely to be in the order of £375 but this is obviously dependent upon the number of people that come along.
What is needed now is for the firm bookings to come in.  The itinerary will be along the lines of :

1. Fly to Croatia early on Fri 8th Oct, travel to and stay in a 3* hotel (B&B) close to the venue.
2. Sightseeing, drink, eat and be merry on Saturday 9th.
3. Small matter of a run (half or full Marathon) on Sunday 10th, Race entry NOT included.
4. Return home with lots of duty free, Monday 11th.

To secure a place(s) you need to pay a £35 non-refundable deposit.  It is planned to put an instalment payment system in place for those that would like to take up that option.  See Mark for more details and come along to the club meeting on 3 December to learn more.

TWELVE WEEKS OVERDUE Membership for 2010
24/02/2010

Still not paid your membership?  Please do because we want to maintain and grow the club, but we also want our membership secretary to be able to close the file.  It's now twelve weeks overdue.  Don't get your name on our list of non-payers soon to be published, get your form and cheque to Norma this week.

It's time to renew your membership.  Will all existing members please complete a "Membership Renewal Form" and submit it by hand or post to Norma Leckie along with the subs please for the membership year starting Friday 1 Jan 2010.

Membership Renewal Forms are available on this website in the "Document Library" (navigation tab on the left) or from Norma.  The same form is appropriate for seniors and juniors.

Riverside Runners' Monthly Handicap Race
18/01/2010
The club’s first regular Handicap Race will take place next Monday (25th Jan) and then routinely on every last Monday of the month.  It is over the same 4.4m course every month and is open to all members.  The Handicap Run is not a race in the conventional sense.  You don't have to be super fit or super fast to take part.  The aim is to provide you with a measure of your current form, whether you’re fit or unfit, a whippet or a tortoise, a new runner or a seasoned athlete.   Points will be awarded based on finishing position (not time) and the person with the most points using their best seven months scores will win the annual competition.  (I am sure that I will convince the Committee to award a decent looking silver cup for the winner with small trophies for second and third provided enough of you come along in the opening months.)

Great detail is provided for those that want to know how it works in a document lodged in the Document Library.  It includes the course map.  The simple version is :

1.    The aim is to set people off so that they should all finish at 19.20hrs
2.    Start and finish is in the Longsands College Playing Field near the top main gate
3.    Set off at your handicap time (I will advise you of that each month) with a tally that you are given
4.    Try your best over the fixed route
5.    Slot your tally on the “Finish Bar” at the end
6.    Watch out for your new starting time for the following month's race which will be calculated based on how well or badly you did in your last race.

To get things up and running this first month, you need a proxy handicap time.  I will calculate that based on your known current performance.  Send me an email to tell me that you are planning to turn up and I’ll calculate your start time this month.  If you are generally an 11 min mile person it will be around 18.30hrs.  If you are generally a 7 min mile person it will be nearer to 18.50hrs.  You can still turn up even if you haven’t told me in advance, but you may get a disadvantaged handicap time because I will concentrate my efforts on getting others away first.

So if you are planning to run, email me now ( email to Maurice click here ) and then turn up ready to run at Longsands top gates at least five minutes before your allotted start time to ensure you can collect your personalised tally (no tally – no time!).

2010 Championship
17/11/2009

At the next committee meeting there will be a discussion about the type of championship that the club should run during 2010.  Most clubs operate an annual championship and they take on many different forms.  In the recent past, Riverside Runners has operated several including :

1.  a point for racing and more points depending on how many people you beat
2.  an age graded championship that required at least two results in each of three distance bands
3.  this year Riverside Runners get points related to distance run and more points for performance based on the Star Award system

Most clubs use some sort of system that nominates that a runners best "x" number of results are used from a potential of "y" number of pre-nominated results.  There are many variations on this theme and there are many other ways of running a championship.

If you have any particular preference for style of championship, then use this opportunity to influence the committee in their decision.  Hopefully there will be many suggestions made for the committee to consider.   It is anticipated that the committee will short list perhaps three and then for a beauty parade of these to members at the December meeting to make the final decision.

If you have an idea, please email it to or talk to Maurice before lunchtime on Monday 23 November (next Monday) to enable him to assemble the complete list for the committee meeting.  (Maurice's email address can be found on the "Contact Us" page of the website.)

Tracey and Neil have run in Amsterdam this weekend (18 Oct).  Neil completed the Half Marathon in just over 1h 30, so well done to him.  However he has to let Tracey take the spotlight with her run in the marathon of 2h 59m 56s achieving 2FV40.  Hope you both enjoyed the weekend.  Certainly much to celebrate.
